Nov. 20- Doughnuts for Dads- 8:10-9:00

Subject Areas
Reading-
We are reading Ahyoka in class. This is a wonderful book about the Cherokee Nation, which features Sequoyah and his daughter Ahyoka. We will read the book in class and answer comprehension questions after each chapter. After reading the book the children will make a book wheel and illustrate their favorite parts.
Math-
We made multiplication flash cards in class. Please practice daily with your child. We are taking 3o second tests in class every week. Your child is taking tests on the level that they are working on. We will be competing with other classes and playing games in our own class to reinforce this very important multiplication skill.
Social Studies-
We are studying the Creeks and Cherokees in class. The story Ahyoka is being read to reinforce the facts about the Cherokees. A book about the Creeks is also being read to learn about this Native American tribe. The class will make flip booklets to illustrate and record information about the Creek and Cherokee Nation.
Science-
Types of soils will be covered in class by Mrs. Birkbeck. Mrs. Robinson did a lesson on soils as an Earth Lesson. We are observing seeds planted in three types of soils. We had a sprout this week.
English-
We are finishing up lessons on singular and plural possessive nouns. It will take lots of practice to get better at this skill. Please go over anything sent home.
We will be working on dictionary skills after Thanksgiving break.
Writing-
We continue to write everyday, whether it's a journal entry or working it in through a story we have read. Since fall is so evident around us we read a book about falling leaves. We had a great discussion about chlorophyll being on the leaves to give them the green color...and how the weather changes the leave to the pretty colors that we seek outside. We did a power writing together and then the kids did one on their own. After they did their writing...they traced leaves and colored them. Later they cut them out and we painted the leaves with chlorophyll (green paint). After the painting the kids scraped the paint off the leaves to see the beautiful color underneath. It was a cool project. which produced great results!!
Spelling-
We continue to have core and review words every week . The paragraph and dictation is every Friday using the week's core and review words.
Classroom News
